The highly anticipated charity event called “Un Rombo nel Cuore” (A Roar in the Heart), a heartfelt memorial dedicated to the great Italian motorcycle racer Doriano Romboni, took place last weekend at the South Milan Karting Circuit in Ottobiano.
The event, centered around a spectacular 3-hour Kart Endurance race, brought together numerous champions, VIPs, and friends of Doriano, all united to honour the memory of a man who left an indelible mark on the world of racing. The main goal of the event was to support Doriano’s family and preserve his legacy.
The Legend of Doriano “Rombo” Romboni
Born in Lerici on December 8, 1968, Doriano Romboni, nicknamed “Rombo” (Roar), was one of the brightest talents in Italian motorcycling in the 90s, often mentioned among the so-called “Tricolour Arrows” alongside Max Biaggi and Loris Capirossi.
His career was full of success:
- 125cc Class (Honda): After his debut in the 1989 World Championship, 1990 saw him secure his first two victories in Germany and the Netherlands, finishing the season in 4th place.
- 250cc Class (Honda/Team Agostini): Moving up to the quarter-litre class, he achieved his most significant results. He earned four victories and totaled 11 podiums. His most iconic wins include triumphs in 1993 (Austria and Germany) and 1994 (United States).
- 500cc Class (Aprilia): In 1996, he moved to the premier class. In 1997, he secured Aprilia’s first podium in the 500cc class, taking third place at Assen.
Known for his aggressive style and generosity, Romboni achieved a total of 6 victories and 22 podiums in his Grand Prix career before transitioning to the World Superbike Championship (SBK) with teams like Ducati and Yamaha.
A Special Guest Line-up
The emotion was palpable with the presence of Doriano’s wife, Sara Romboni, and their daughter, Carolina, a living testament to the affection surrounding their family.
Among the exceptional guests was a mix of personalities from the worlds of sport and entertainment:
- Radio 105 DJ Marco Comollo and the racer Elia Sammartin.
- Numerous former professional cyclists, including European Champion Giacomo Nizzolo, Matteo Pelucchi (winner of the Tirreno-Adriatico ) and Christian Delle Stelle.
- A significant presence was that of the well-known sports journalist Paolo Beltramo (Sky), who was present in Latina on the day of the tragic accident in 2013.
A total of 20 teams with over 80 registered drivers participated in the race, competing with passion and sportsmanship on the Lombard circuit. Special thanks went to Luca Gualini of the South Milan Karting Circuit in Ottobiano for the hospitality and logistical organization.
The event was beautifully summarized by Marco Comollo on the eve: “A Roar in the Heart,” a memorial for Doriano Romboni, the great one. […] a special and beautiful Sunday, breathing in that smell of gasoline, of race adrenaline.
The day was not just a race, but a genuine tribute to Doriano’s talent and generosity, keeping his memory alive through the passion that always fueled him: the roar of the engines.
